The regular process of creation in each sculpture/character for Olga Saretsky begins in her dreams and/or observation of the natural world and finding the right material elements that bring an idea to life. Most of her character costumes are made of fabric, sequins, metal light structures, flowers, buttons, feathers and different sizes of plastic icons. In other words, the idea is conceived first and then she finds the right combination of elements to create an illusion into a real object.
These unique ideas are the beginning of a series of living-art creatures. The consistency of these characters is made by the use of glamorous and pop versions of her own fashion style. From her experience as a dancer and performer from Kazakhstan, her living-art creatures evolved as fashion statements showing a personal interpretation of traditional characters of Slavic culture. She participated in many fashion shows through the last 10 years. Two of these events were Dunedin Fine Art Center‘s (DFAC) 16th Wearable Art Fashion Show in Tampa, Florida and the World Textile Art-WTA Organization’s 10th International Biennial of Contemporary Textile Art.
Kikimora Studio’s strength as a business is based on Olga’s disciplined focus in two areas, “deeply understanding the performers needs”, and creating high-quality and great-looking costumes. For every artist, finding a sellable product or service is key to success. When she created her first bodysuit costume, she didn’t just create an amazing product for the performance world, she was also showing her mastery of the sewing process and the experimental process of each sculpture piece. Many of her upcoming ideas can be found in her sketches, which she then converts to living art using fabric as her main medium.
Consistency, work ethic and genuine desire to always improve are the keys to Kikimora Studio’s success. Olga is an artist who has a strong relationship with her team of performers and seamstresses and they support each other. This sense of community creates efficiency in the way resources are used at Kikimora Studio. Artists like Olga tend to resourcefulness and innovation in their business which in turn leads to creativity and efficiency. Even though Kikimora Studio wasn’t a traditional business in the beginning like many other artists, the urgency for finding solutions and the repetition and practice of her craft made her gradually bloom into success over the years.
Some of the latest characters and living art were a summarized version of other pieces from the past. Constantly practicing her sewing skills allows her extra room to experiment with unconventional processes and the use of different materials. In addition to this routine, she was always working towards taking advantage of the new fashion shows, events and collaborations projects to grow her diverse and unique creations. During the last Wearable Fashion show, she developed various characters that evoque the horror of war, the Russian-Ukraine war combining the visual expression of creatures in pain with the traditional Slavic music of a collective childhood for people who were born into that culture. That different direction from the always happy characters required courage and the desire to express a diverse set of feelings about life and all its conditions.
Kikimora Studio is a strong business now because of a very smart and persistent idea of having one product, mastering the process of creating that object and at the same time investing the time and energy in the next step of unconventional creation. Many artists in the beginning invest all the time and resources in the creation of something glamorous but without a product or service that builds the basic business floor, it becomes almost impossible to continue and grow as an artist. Art has two dimensions, one is symbolic and connects with instincts, passions and memories. The second one consists of the logistics of working with materials and designing a product that will have a viable opportunity and sustainability. Without a doubt, we can see that Kikimora Studio is a blooming flower because of the work invested in the business since its humble beginnings.
