Daily Inspiration: Meet Olga Saretsky

Today we’d like to introduce you to Olga Saretsky.

Hi Olga, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My journey began in 1977 in Kazakhstan, where I was born into a Russian family during the USSR era. From an early age, despite academic challenges like dyslexia, my love for the arts and performance guided my path. I dreamed of being a circus performer and dived into the world of fashion and dance, even teaching myself hip-hop and performing on the streets.

By 21, I had become a seasoned performer, choreographer, and costume designer. I traveled to Thailand to perform, which significantly honed my skills and cultural appreciation. Returning to Kazakhstan, I achieved national celebrity status through a successful dance duet.

My artistic ambitions led me to New York, where I explored new opportunities, including working as a go-go dancer. Despite facing personal challenges, including leaving an abusive marriage, my passion for dance and connection with the audience never wavered.

In 2011, I founded Kikimora Studio, focusing on solo performances that incorporate elements of Belly Dance, Fire Dance, and character performance, embodying the spirit of Kikimora, an Eastern European female spirit and Fairy tail character. Three years later, I expanded my creative pursuits by launching Kikimora Fashion on Etsy, blending my love for fashion with performance art.

Today, I stand as an artist and entrepreneur, grateful for every step that has shaped my journey. My mission continues to be about embracing each moment, learning from challenges, and using art to transform and connect across cultures.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road; there have been considerable challenges along the way. My struggles began early with academic difficulties due to dyslexia, particularly with subjects like mathematics. However, I found solace in the creative arts, which became my refuge and passion.

After moving to the United States, I faced significant personal challenges, including navigating an abusive marriage. This period was particularly difficult, but it also strengthened my resolve to build a life and career that I loved, centered around my passion for performance and art.

Professionally, establishing myself in a new country was no small feat. Breaking into the Miami Florida performance scene required persistence and resilience, as I started from scratch, performing as a gogo dancer, and circus performer while building connections and opportunities.

Launching my own business, Kikimora Studio, and later Kikimora Fashion, also presented its own set of challenges, from financial constraints to learning the intricacies of entrepreneurship and managing a growing brand. Despite these hurdles, my love for the stage and my connection with audiences have guided me through these times, inspiring continuous growth and a commitment to creating art that resonates deeply with people.

I am the founder of Kikimora Studio and Kiki Fashion, where I blend the worlds of high fashion and performance art. My work primarily revolves around creating unique, visually stunning performances and apparel, specializing in areas like Living Art, and character performances that embody the mystical essence of Kikimora, a figure from Eastern European folklore.

At Kikimora Studio, I am known for producing otherworldly elegance through meticulously choreographed performances that are designed not just to entertain but to provide a transformative experience for the audience. These performances often feature at exclusive events, blending art and entertainment in a way that captivates and enchants.

Through Kikimora Fashion brand, I design and sell custom-made costumes and apparel that are both artistic and functional, tailored specifically for performers and those looking to express themselves through unique, expressive clothing. My designs are inspired by my experiences as a performer, ensuring they not only look spectacular but also support the performer’s movement and comfort.

What I am most proud of is how I’ve managed to intertwine my passion for dance, fashion, and storytelling into a career that celebrates and elevates the human spirit through art. Each project and performance is a piece of my journey, reflecting my personal growth and artistic evolution.

What sets me apart is my ability to create a deep connection with my audience, whether through a dance performance or through the detailed, thoughtful design of my costumes. My background as a performer who has experienced the challenges and triumphs of the stage allows me to bring authenticity and empathy to my work, crafting experiences that are not only beautiful but filled with emotion and mystery. This personal touch and commitment to authenticity and quality are what distinguishes my work in the bustling worlds of fashion and performance art.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I envision a future where the boundaries between disciplines become increasingly blurred. Fashion shows will likely begin to incorporate elements traditionally seen in performance art, and vice versa, paving the way for new forms of expression and artistry that challenge conventional limits.

These developments represent thrilling opportunities for innovation and growth. As an artist and designer, my focus will be on remaining adaptable and forward-thinking, essential for navigating these changes. This approach will enable me to continue delivering unique, compelling experiences that resonate deeply with both audiences and consumers.
